Celebrate Black History Month

Tomorrow is February 1, so it is time again to celebrate Black History Month, and there are a number of ways to do so downtown. The good news: it's leap year, so you have one extra day to take it in!

The Ohio Statehouse celebrates Black History Month with a special display, no-cost historical performances on Tuesdays and special tours of the George Washington Williams Room.

Check out a special K - third grade student art exhibit sponsored by COTA. The Rosa Parks: The Power of One exhibit features work expressing the students' artistic expression of how they would change things for the better. 

Living history programs will be presented each Tuesday at noon in the Museum Gallery. Visitors will meet first-person interpreters of prominent African-American figures in U.S. history. Each 45-minute vignette will focus on African-American History, sharing the rich history, drama and adventure.

On Wednesdays, come enjoy musical performances from noon - 1 p.m. in the Crypt of the Ohio Statehouse. These no-cost concerts feature musical groups celebrating the legacy of music rooted in the African-American experience.

Throughout the month, check out the special tours of the George Washington Williams Memorial, a tribute to Ohio's first African-American legislator. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives as a Republican legislator from Hamilton County in 1879. The room exhibits furnishings representing the period.

You can also find a special soul food menu at the Capitol Cafe each Wednesday in February.

Enjoy a special public reading of two children's books and a sampling of poetry, all written by African-American authors. This is part of a national African-American Read In, an effort to make literacy an important part of Black History Month.
